One of the biggest debates over the last decade or so has been is vaping better than smoking? Let’s look at this argument from both sides of the fence and see what we can find.
Is Vaping Better Than Smoking Cigarettes?
Vaping in the beginning was designed as a way to help smokers quit cigarettes. Most devices in the early 2000’s looked like your standard cigarette and were in some ways successful at the task in hand. Be it as a deterrent or a middle ground for smokers alike. In more recent years vaping has evolved into something else. More and more people are picking up vaping instead of smoking. Vapers proclaim it to be a ‘healthier alternative’. For something so popular, it always surprises me to see so much heated debate in regards to vaping vs smoking. While it’s hard at the moment to definitely say one way or the other, the early research is saying yes.
Difference Between Vaping And Smoking
Vaping started over a decade ago in China. It wasn’t until about 2010 that vaping really started to take off. Compare that to smoking which has been around for 100’s of years now. The main differences between vaping and smoking that are health related is the method of fire and ingredient intake. Smoking is the combustion of tobacco which can contain hundreds of different chemicals, 20 of which are knowingly linked to causing cancer. Vaping on the other hand is the process of heating up a small amount of liquid to the point that it turns into vapor which is then drawn into the lungs.
What is in vape juice you ask? Most eliquid contains vegetable glycerin, polyethylene glycol, flavoring and nicotine. Is vaping bad? maybe. While the ingredients are food grade and FDA approved to be ingested, researchers are still not sure what kind of effects vapor has on the body.
Vaping Versus Smoking
If you believe the hype then vaping is the best thing since sliced bread. If you were to alternately listen to an anti-smoking group then you’d hear that vaporizers are just another way to hook kids into smoking. So, which one is it? Are vapes just tasty cigarettes designed to addict children at an early age. I think not.
The biggest threat facing vaping isn’t that it could be bad for you, it’s the fact that vaping is an affordable option to smoking. Big tobacco companies are losing money, governments are losing tax benefits and large pharmaceutical companies are losing revenue from NRT products like patches, sprays, pills and gums.
While the rise in popularity is fueling innovation across the entire vaping industry, increased legislation and restriction from governments is hitting vaping businesses hard. Some governments like the United Kingdom have come out in support of vaping, while other governments like Singapore and Australia have backed away from e-cigarettes completely. Singapore went as far as banning vaping use completely.
Health Benefits Of Vaping Vs Smoking
Public Health England has published studies which say that vaping could be as much as 95% safer than traditional cigarettes. They also said that it is a viable way for long-term smokers to quit cigarettes. Unfortunately one of the largest health organisations in the world have been been on the fence for some years now in regards to is vaping better than smoking. The WHO or World Health Organisation haven’t condemned it but they haven’t endorsed it either. The WHO is one of the leading health organisations and many countries follow their advice.
Ultimately, what you choose to believe is up to you. Is vaping better than smoking? There have been no credible studies done to date which have indicated that vaping is bad for you. While there has been a lot of misinformation published in mainstream media, we will have to wait and see what happens to vapers in the long-term. In the interim its important that you take the time to do your own research. You can hardly blame governments for their hesitant approach to e-cigarettes and vaping. We were all once told that cigarettes weren’t harmful either!
